Permitted Development

Did you know you can add extensions to your home, convert garages and lofts and construct outbuildings without the need for planning permission? Permitted development is a government scheme to relax the planning laws which allows homeowners to enlarge their homes within specified limits under a building notice, and in some cases even without a building notice such as the construction of a summer house.

The scheme shortens the time it takes for a project to get underway and reduces the cost of fees payable to the local authority. As it stands permitted development is here to stay.

However there is one caveat to this rule concerning the permissible size of extension a detached property can be extended up to 4 metres from the rear, an attached property can be extended up to 3 metres from the rear.

So, if you are considering an extension to your home, don’t delay in taking advantage of this initiative.

Adapting Homes For The Disabled

Did you also know that there are grants available to adapt your home if you or a member of your household are disabled? A Disabled Facilities Grant of up to £30,000 is available from your local council to help towards the cost of adapting your home.

The work carried out must be for the sole use of the disabled person and could be anything from installing ramps and hand rails for improved access – to converting a garage to create a downstairs shower or wet room. These works are usually free of any planning or building regulation fees and are VAT free.
